In loving Arms is a collaborative effort between the Comal County Child Welfare Board, Christus Santa Rosa Hospital - New Braunfels and Mothers of Preschoolers (MOPS) to prevent Shaken Baby Syndrome. Through this program we are helping to reduce the injuries and deaths that occur when babies are shaken out of anger and frustration. 

Through the nursery at the hospital, we pass out copies of the DVD The Happiest Baby on the Block free of charge to new parents. This DVD teaches a swaddling technique developed by Dr. Harvey Karp. This technique helps to calm and soothe the infant thereby relieving the stress that comes from nonstop crying. In addition to the DVD, new parents are given a custom made swaddling blanket that fit the dimensions given in the video. Each blanket is sewn by members of MOPS. Parents are also given a resource packet that includes parenting tips, information on Shaken Baby Syndrome, and ways to prevent child abuse.

We also provided a copy of the DVD to each daycare and high school in Comal County in an effort to reach more caregivers.
In the near future we hope to offer these DVD’s to every new mother and father who gives birth at the hospital. We are also planning on offering classes in the swaddling technique free of charge to members of Comal County beginning in January 2010.
