We believe that providing for the continued welfare of our community requires a group effort. The Comal County Child Welfare Board relies on the compassion and generosity of people and institutions who share this belief.

The success of our mission continues to rely heavily on generous donations and grants from citizens and groups in Comal County. In addition to individual donations we currently receive funding from the United Way of Comal County and from benevolent jurors who elect to forego their jury fees and allocate the fees to help abused and neglected children through the CCCWB.

Each of our programs contributes significantly to our county’s most vulnerable population and there are many, many ways you can help bring hope and healing into children’s lives. We have listed the numerous ways you may donate, including an option that calls on the SmileAmazon.com Foundation to make donation in your name!

#2 Donate to the CCCWB RAINBOW ROOM

The Comal County Child Welfare Board Rainbow Room provides items that children and their caregivers need to ensure that every child has a safe and stable home environment, and has personal items to help them feel secure and valued. The Rainbow Room is located in the CPS building so caseworkers have easy access to items.
Among many other items, the Rainbow Room is stocked with clothing, hygiene items, diapers, baby wipes, car seats, pack-and-plays, beds and bedding, cleaning supplies for families, fire extinguishers, medication lock boxes, carbon monoxide detectors, back packs, school supplies, games, toys, and fire detectors all of which directly benefit children in CPS care. The Rainbow Room also provides CPS caseworkers with Walmart and other gift cards for use when the Rainbow Room’s physical inventory does not have what a child or children on their caseloads needs.

All of the Rainbow Room inventory is new because we want children to have a sense of pride in their belongings and to know they are valued and matter. If you decide to contribute items or gift cards or money to the CCCWB Rainbow Room, you will make an immediate and powerful difference in children’s lives and circumstances.

Throughout the year, the Comal County Child Welfare Board hosts and partners with other non-profit organizations several campaigns to provide for all children who are working with Child Protective Services. Look for communications from us as the next campaign begins!

In partnership with New Braunfels Angels, the CCCWB coordinated a back-to-school shoe campaign
to provide new shoes to CPS children in time for the start of the new school year. Over $8,000 in shoes were purchased and donated to 126 children, just in time for the first day of school.

In partnership with Pajama Promise of New Braunfels, the CCCWB received new pajamas for all Comal
County children in CPS. The 308 pairs of pajamas were donated by community sponsors through Pajama Promise.

Carrying Hope provides our Board with awesome Hope Packs each month which are filled with comfort items and necessities for every child (and every age group) entering the foster care system in Comal County and Central Texas. These stylish backpacks (CarePacks) provide scared and traumatized children and youth with a something they can call their own. They can stop worrying about how they will manage during their first night away from home because the CarePacks’ contents anticipate all of their physical needs during the time of transition and uncertainty.

The CCCWB’s Christmas Gift campaign provided Christmas gifts to more than 300 children based on
specific requests from each child. In 2019 85% of the gifts were purchased by Community volunteers who answered the call to sponsor children. Because of generous contributions of over $31,900 in gifts, all children’s wish lists
were fulfilled.

The board hosted a back-to-school movie party and provided $8500 in back-to-school clothing gift
cards to ensure children had new clothes they could be proud of when school started.

One of the greatest needs in Comal County is foster families. 75% of children who are removed from their Comal County homes because of abuse and neglect are forced to move to other counties and cities because there are so few foster homes available in our county. Moving away from their hometown adds to the trauma they are already experiencing after being taken from their homes. Recognizing familiar surroundings, remaining in their same school, having visits from family members, ansd remaining close to friends can make a world of the difference for a child in care.

Becoming a foster parent isn’t an easy decision, but the difference you can make can be one of the most rewarding and positive life-changing opportunities – for you and the children in your care.

Please call or email the Comal County Foster/Adoption Specialist to find out more about what it takes to be foster parent, and how become a foster parent. Email Udonna.Williams@dfps.state.tx.us, or call (830) 608-3244.
